Not much is new this week, but since one of the sections of the baby book asked about food craving (and aversions), I thought I would make that the topic of this week’s update. Here are the highlights:
- I was fortunate to not have horrible morning sickness. In fact I didn’t have morning sickness at all, but only got sick in the evenings. This was nice because it made teaching in the mornings easier, but essentially also meant that I was worthless after about 4 pm.
- The idea of soup is enough to make me sick. I make soup in huge batches because if I’m going to make my own carrot-free stock, I’m going to make a lot of soup. After one bowl, however, I am done. It took us several weeks of Rakicy being forced to eat soup for every meal to realize that maybe we should just stop making it.
- I LOVE Cracked Pepper Triskets! I don’t know if these are a new flavor, but it’s one of the only foods that always tastes good to me. In fact, I have 5 boxes in the pantry right now because they were on sale last week.
- During the first trimester, I loved pineapple. One day I was eating pineapple and my mouth and tongue started to burn. Later I discovered that the acidity of pineapple is what makes it such a good marinade base. I had essentially marinated and tenderized my tongue. Since then I only buy the small cans of pineapple to avoid repeating this problem.
- Due to a stomach surgery when I was a toddler, I haven’t been able to actually throw up in over 25 years, until a couple of weeks ago. Pizza apparently reversed the surgery. Now I’m not sure if it was a coincidence or pizza actually bothers me, but I tried again this week and no luck. I may never be able to eat pizza again…sad
- Everyone told me I wouldn’t be able to spicy foods while pregnant. I love peppercinis and banana peppers have gone through several jars. They don’t seem to bother the baby at all.
- One of my first clues that I was pregnant was that I woke up one morning and couldn’t stand the smell or taste of coffee or Diet Dr. Pepper.
The baby now weighs just over 1 1/2 pounds and is about 8 1/2 inches crown to rump. We’ve outgrown the fruit references for a while. We’ve officially reached the point of viability although both the baby and the house both have a long way to go before we are really ready. Although most of our classes are in March and April, I went ahead and bought a few cloth diapers this week. I’ve always known that Rakicy claimed no baby experience, but somewhere my brain failed to process that included the fact that he’d never changed a diaper. Since the childcare class is going to likely use disposable diapers, I figured I should go ahead and get a few of the Bumgenius, so we can both get used to them.
