April, 2009:

3-D Baby

We went for back to Peoria for what we thought was going to be our last ultrasound yesterday. It won’t be, but that’s a long story.

Anyway, at the very end, the tech switched over the 3-D software and spent about 15 minutes trying to get us 3-D pictures of the baby’s face. The technology takes a video clip that looks like a regular ultrasound and then feeds it through a computer program that turns the 2-D images into 3-D. The baby was asleep, but also quite uncooperative and insisted on having at least one hand in front of his/her face. Luckily, the tech was able to go in and remove the hand to reveal most of the face underneath. The wavy lines on the baby’s face are from movement, and the missing pieces of the face/head are places where the computer didn’t have any info to fill in once the hand was cropped out.

I didn’t get all of the pictures scanned yet because this has been a really busy week and they sent us home with about 20 pictures, but here are the best ones.

What kind of place is this?

We took the Labor and Delivery tour today at the hospital where G is going to deliver (as opposed to some other random hospital). It was quite helpful and enlightening. For instance, one lady asked how many people she could bring into the operating room for a Cesarean procedure. The Technician replied with an answer of one, but how many people would you really want in there? “Yes please, I would like to bring my whole family plus their children and first cousins.” Umm…No. One would probably be more than enough to try to stay out of the staff’s way.

Another shocker to me was happened after the baby was delivered. Apparently they want to prepare the child for a life of crime. Of course not terrible crime, more on a probationary level. You may be wondering, “how can this be,” or “this guys nuts,” or you may even be thinking “how did they know your kid was going to grow up to be a nuisance to society? Very insightful.” Well, those thoughts are not without warrant because they put an ankle bracelet on every newborn to keep them confined to a certain area on the delivery room floor. Obviously, I find comfort in knowing that no one will walk off with our newborn, nonetheless I find humor in their methods.

In other baby news, she has been quite active and can be felt easily and seen from outside G’s belly. We can even tell where he is laying. Lately, according to G, she has been head down and inciting many hurried trips to the bathroom. To explain how ornery he is being: G and I were headed to the store and G told me she REALLY had to go to the bathroom and as soon as we got there the feeling had subsided.

That’s it for my random insights, and thanks, as always, for reading!
