B is less than 3 weeks old and already got in his first fight this week. I lost.
B really likes the car. Even on a fussy day, he goes right to sleep as soon as he is settled in his carseat and the car starts moving. While we could theoretically just drive around town, now that I’m feeling better, we’ve been trying to go on short trips to places without many people.* On Thursday, we had just gotten home from running an errand and he woke up right as we pulled in the driveway.
He wanted to eat and was getting quite mad by the time we got in the house. When he gets really mad, he thrusts his legs straight out (Rakicy calls the the dying cockroach). Right as I stuck my head down by his feet to try and loosen the straps on the carseat, he did the dying cockroach and caught my nose. Blood instantly started gushing everywhere. Since I was fairly certain that I couldn’t get him out of the carseat, much less breastfeed him or change his diaper with only one hand, I rocked the carseat with my foot while trying to stop my nosebleed.
Clearly whoever designed the loosening mechanism on the Graco carseats never had an infant who fought with his feet. I have, however, now mastered the loosening of the straps without actually looking
*According to the pediatrician, we are supposed to avoid crowds (specifically church, Walmart, family reunions, etc) for the first 60 days, so our adventures have been limited–campus restaurants deserted for the summer, the drive thru at the bank, quick trips in the grocery store in the middle of a weekday morning, etc.
