The Month He Tried to Eat the Furniture

Al Capone is 6 months old! As I was looking back through our picture to put together his video, I realized that the prevailing theme this month is snotty noses, followed closely by Capone eating non-eatable things.

In the last month, he has finally settled on somewhat of a schedule. We’ve always followed his lead. He napped on request, he nursed on request, about the only thing that was scheduled was that he got up around 7:30 am and went to bed between 6:30 and 7 pm. The rest of his day was up to him. Becca has been very supportive of this plan. I was worried that she was going to push us to get him on a “12:30 is naptime” kind of schedule, but she has told me several times that she thinks he’ll get a schedule when he’s ready. In the meantime, she just followed his lead and he is settled into a napping, eating, playing schedule that works (most of the time) for everybody.

Here’s a look at his day….
6:00 wake up, diaper change, nurse, back to bed
7:30ish up for the day, get dressed, hang out in the bathroom while we get ready, nurse again
8:15 off to daycare
9:30-11:00ish bottle of breastmilk and morning nap
11-12:30ish playtime, try and convince daycare kids to share their lunches
12:30-2:30: bottle of breastmilk and afternoon nap
2:30-3:30: bottle of breastmilk, playtime
3:30 picked up from daycare, errands,
5:30: mashed avocado and breastmilk
6:30 bathtime
7:00 nurse and bedtime

The other major change we have seen in the last month is lots of frustration. He wants to be mobile (rolling is not good enough), he wants to eat what we’re eating, he we want his tooth to arrive. He is a very happy baby, but he has got a little bit of a temper. It is almost always tied to something he can’t have, do, etc.

I was making a pumpkin cake a few weeks ago and he stole the spoon of pumpkin puree while I wasn’t looking. It instantly went to his mouth. We’ve been very cautious of solids. Babies are supposed to be breastfed exclusively until 6 months and we were in no hurry to rush them. After he devoured the pumpkin, we slowly introduced a little cereal (1 Tbs of cereal mixed with 2 oz of breastmilk once a week). We gradually thickened this and then this week he got a little mashed avocado. He knows what an avacado looks like and this afternoon when I was trying to mash and freeze some avocodo for later, he threw a fit that I wasn’t feeding him any.

He also is starting to understand some simple phrases. 6 months old is a highly distractable age and so frequently he pulls away while breastfeeding in order to check out something that caught his attention. If I say “Are you all done?” he looks at me and either pushes my breast away or comes back to eat some more. When we go to change his diaper, most of the time we can say “legs down” and he straightens his legs (as opposed to trying to eat his toes) and lets us change his diaper.
He does not, however, know is name. This is entirely our fault. We use lots of nicknames and just started making it a point to try to use his name on a regular basis. He looks at us when we talk, but he doesn’t yet respond to his name. We’ve started teaching him some baby sign language. Right now we’re only doing a few signs, but we’ll be adding more soon.
He can also sit up for a few seconds without falling over. He can ride in a grocery cart or sit in a restaurant highchair for a little bit as well. He tires out really fast, but he loves looking around from this perspective.
We have a really busy month coming up. We travelling to Missouri in a few weeks to celebrate Thanksgiving and an early Christmas. We also have several Christmas parties to attend with friends, Capone’s Christmas program at daycare, and his visit with Santa at Rakicy’s work.
