Some kids are attached to a stuffed bear or bunny. Some kids have a favorite blanket that they won’t sleep without. Capone has a nasal aspirator.
He became obsessed with it a few weeks ago when he discovered it in the basket on his changing table. It’s the hospital issue nasal aspirator that was in his bassinet (you can see it in the upper corner of the picture below). He likes to wave it around. He likes to make it go puff. And as long as his nose isn’t actually congested, he tries to suction his own nose and then giggles when I help him.
He has other comfort objects (a small blanket we call a fifi and a stuffed bunny), but last night the nasal aspirator officially joined our bed. Capone currently has a cold and while he would prefer for that nasal aspirator to not actually go anywhere near his nose, he’s been miserable at night and he would like to play with it.
At 2:30 am when we had tried rocking and bouncing and putting him in our bed and putting him in his bed and teething tablets (we also have a tooth on the way) and Tylenol, we got out the nasal aspirator and gave it to him.
It wasn’t the magic bullet, as Rakicy still had to bounce him on the yoga ball and then begin the very gradual transition back to our bed, but all 3 4 of us slept for the next 3 hours (this is the record from the last 3 days) and this morning when Capone woke up, I found him smiling and playing with his beloved nasal aspirator.
We really need to work on a new comfort object.

I love it.
"Whatever works" works.

It is so funny the things that kids latch on to. My son will go through phases where he carries around the most random of things to be his security objects. But, hey, if they make him happy it does not bother me.
