We’ve been a little busy lately. I took Capone on his first airplane ride over Spring Break to visit his Nana and Papa and his great grandparents. Shortly after we got back Nana and Caitlin came to look at Graduate Schools for Caitlin. We’ve also hosted/helped out with dissertation celebrations and baby showers.
But in the middle of all of those adventures and celebrations, we’ve had another adventure. The night before Capone and I left for Arkansas, our washing machine died.
It wouldn’t drain, it wouldn’t spin, nada. Rakicy and I spend the evening wringing out cloth diapers by hand. We then dried them and packed semi-clean cloth diapers for our trip, with the idea that we could wash them when we arrived.
We survived. Rakicy even managed to take apart the washer while Capone and I were gone and it was working by the time we got home.
There was a problem, however, all of the out of balance/washing machine repair/general old washing machine movement meant that the drain hose had unexpectedly come loose. The Thursday before last at 7 am, I heard what I thought was a very loud coffee pot. It was in fact, not a coffee pot, but water pouring into the downstairs hallway light fixture (our laundry room is on the second floor).
Long story short, we’ve had a soggy couple of weeks and the culprit of everything was 1 tiny baby sock that had gotten sucked into the washing machine pump. We didn’t have major water damage, but we will likely have to replace the upstairs carpet a little earlier than we’d planned and our washing machine may get the boot soon as well.
In fact, I already had a gift ready for the baby shower I attended this afternoon, but I went back and added a lingere bag for baby socks. I think it may become part of my standard baby gift ideas. 1 rogue baby sock doesn’t just lose it’s mate, but can cause $1,000+ of damage.

Oh, my! So sorry to hear that this happened to you! We have a few of these bags that I've gotten out of the habit of using (and consequently, I can't find the mates to any kid's socks). I am going to find them and start the habit again!

Oh yikes!! I have those bags. I used to put the kids socks in them because it made it easier to put them away after I did the laundry but I got lazy. I may just have to go get them back out again.

Ironically, I have several of those bags. I used them obsessively for keeping my cloth breast pads from getting lost in the wash (or put in the drier), but it never occurred to me that when people say the washing machine "ate" clothes, they were serious.

Wow! I am so sorry! I can't believe a tiny little sock caused all that damage!
